Special Immunology Associates (SIA)

El Rio’s Special Immunology Associates (SIA) offers quality, comprehensive health care to people living with HIV/AIDS. Since 1991, SIA has been providing HIV primary care to the people of Southern Arizona. Our integrated care focuses on  medical and behavioral health as well as the social and emotional needs of each patient. We are a team of dedicated and skilled professionals committed to working with individuals, couples, and families to improve the health and quality of life, not only for our patients but also for the people who care for them.

SIA offers a broad range of services such as:

  • Mental health and substance abuse counseling
  • Medical Case Management
  • Treatment adherence counseling
  • Nutritional services
  • An on-site laboratory and pharmacy
  • Referrals to specialty care and hospital-based treatment
  • Health education programs

SIA accepts most major health plans and also has a sliding fee scale for all offered services. In addition, we are funded (in part) by grants from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, HIV/AIDS Bureau, and the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Programs.

Health Care for the Homeless

El Rio is the largest provider of primary health care, mobile medical services, care coordination, advocacy, and same day appointments in the Tucson area for people who are experiencing homelessness.  These services are made possible through federal “Health Care for the Homeless” funding. Although access to care for the homeless is available at all El Rio sites, El Rio’s Broadway Health Center at 1101 E. Broadway Blvd. specializes in the needs of people who are currently (or at risk for) homelessness, including people with insurance, the uninsured or those who qualify for a sliding fee scale based on income.

Our mobile healthcare is offered at agency sites that historically provide services to the homeless, including: shelters, treatment centers, and churches. The Outreach teams include: Family Nurse Practitioners, Medical Assistants, and Care Coordinators. Healthcare services include, but are not limited to: medication therapy; acute wound care; vital signs monitoring; and referrals for x-rays and labs.

CODAC & El Rio's Whole Health Program

El Rio has partnered with CODAC, a comprehensive mental health service provider, to bring medical services to adults who struggle with behavioral health challenges.  These services are available at CODAC’s Alvernon Way Clinic.  The Whole Health program offers mental health care, primary care and health education at one location.

At Whole Health, we will help you stay in control of your mental and physical well-being by helping you to recognize the physical symptoms of health problems and learn healthier strategies for managing stress.

Services offered include:

  • Primary medical care
  • Case management, therapy and psychiatry appointments
  • Coordinated referrals to medical specialists
  • Lab work and on-site pharmacy
  • A personalized wellness plan and free classes on topics such as
    • Nutrition
    • Physical Activity
    • Sleep and rest
  • Fitness classes, exercise equipment and training that you can do either at home or at a gym.

Since 1991


Since 1991 El Rio’s Special Immunology Associates (SIA) has provided early intervention services to people living with HIV/AIDS. SIA provides primary care (inpatient and outpatient) consultative care, behavioral health counseling, education and information regarding new treatments and therapies that can improve the quality of life for individuals throughout Southern Arizona who are living with HIV/AIDS.


The El Rio Hepatitis C Clinic was established to improve the quality of care for patients affected by Hepatitis C, a chronic viral infection of the liver that causes cirrhosis, liver failure and sometimes liver cancer. Education and support groups are offered to those we serve.
