The El Rio Nurse-Midwifery Service was one of the first of its kind in Tucson. Health care to women and childbearing families is provided by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) at El Rio Health Center. Our clients give birth at Tucson Medical Center in modern birthing rooms.

The El Rio Certified Nurse-Midwives are specialists in normal childbirth. They are Registered Nurses who have completed an accredited university program in Nurse-Midwifery. They are certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and licensed in the State of Arizona. For centuries women have looked to midwives to advise and assist them in childbirth. Today’s CNM is a highly skilled professional who still carries on this tradition of personal, family-oriented care with sensitivity and understanding.

The Certified Nurse Midwives of El Rio share the belief that all women are entitled to safe, satisfying health care and that pregnancy and childbirth are healthy, normal experiences. Childbirth is of the most special and exciting experiences life has to offer. The dedicated group of El Rio Midwives is committed to enhancing families’ experience by involving the patient in the entire range of care. Among the services provided are prenatal care, labor and birth, and postpartum care.

Women who are not pregnant can come to the El Rio CNMs for routine gynecological care, including annual exams, pap tests, breast exams and treatment of minor problems. A range of birth control methods, as well as pre-pregnancy counseling are provided.

El Rio continues toward our mission of providing affordable access to quality care. Options for payment arrangements are available to our patients for El Rio Nurse-Midwifery Services. We offer several plans to choose from, including private insurance, AHCCCS, SOBRA, and a sliding-fee scale for self-pay clients, according to income. A financial counselor is available to assist in choosing the right plan for each family. Most importantly you can begin receiving care before you have coverage.
