Areas of Excellence

El Rio is nationally recognized for high quality care and successful patient outcomes in many areas.  In many areas, El Rio is the largest or only provider of these services in Southern Arizona.

Asthma Intervention Program

For patients diagnosed with Asthma, El Rio offers specialized care which includes two to three hours of educational instruction on how to care for their condition.  Parents receive education on how to manage their child’s condition.  Children are seen several times in the first year after diagnosis to monitor and record improvement.

El Rio’s goal is for patients with asthma to be able to live life as any other – active in sports, regular attendance at school or work and improving their overall health, despite an asthma diagnosis.  This program has drawn national attention and is now a model for best practice.

Behavioral Health

El Rio Behavioral Health is proud to offer high quality behavioral health services and has been recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) with Distinction in Behavioral Health Integration for providing evidence-based protocols, resources, and tools to support the broad needs of behavioral health patients.

Additionally, El Rio Behavioral Health received endorsement by The Joint Commission Behavioral Health Care and Human Services Accreditation Program.  This program is noteworthy for organizations committed to providing safe, high-quality care and treatment services to patients with behavioral health conditions.

Clinical Pharmacy

El Rio’s Clinical Pharmacy team has been recognized for their success with patients who have diabetes or are taking multiple medications.  The team believes one must look at patients with a holistic approach – diabetes, for example, comes with other issues such as obesity or hypertension.

Clinical Pharmacists meet with patients for a comprehensive consultation including obtaining relevant care information, determining what the patient already knows about their condition(s) and then discussing what successful disease management looks like.  This program includes ongoing, direct consultation between the patient and clinical pharmacist, integrated treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and patient education on how to proactively manage their own health.

Hepatitis

The El Rio Hepatitis C Clinic was established to improve the quality of care for patients affected by Hepatitis C, a chronic viral infection of the liver that causes cirrhosis, liver failure and sometimes liver cancer.  Education and support groups are offered to those we serve.

HIV/AIDS

El Rio Health is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS care in Southern Arizona.  Our specialized provider teams offer medical and behavioral health care to address the complexities of patient needs.

LGBTQ+ Care

El Rio offers a safe and welcoming environment to all patients regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.  Care teams with clinical expertise in this area offer supportive systems to identify and manage care needs of LGBTQ+ patients.

Pain Management

El Rio care teams take an interdisciplinary approach to chronic pain management including functional, clinical, emotional and lifestyle assessments.  We are participants in national collaboratives driving innovative approaches to team-based pain management practices.

Patient Navigation

At every El Rio location there are Community Health Advisors (CHA) and team members available to, not only help you register as a patient, but also to explore health insurance options with you.  They can assist with Medicaid (AHCCCS) enrollment, ACA Marketplace options and our sliding fee scale discount program.  The CHAs can also assist you and your family to get access to utility assistance, housing, domestic violence support, food boxes, legal services and other support services.  They are here to help you and your family live a safe, healthy and happy life.

RN Care Coordination

El Rio offers a team of Registered Nurses across all health center sites to assure you have access to ongoing care coordination, especially after an inpatient hospitalization.  Our patients who have recently been discharged from the hospital or who have chronic diseases or health conditions have a Registered Nurse Care Coordinator assigned to assure that needed tests are performed, appointments are made, medications are correct and resources for health education and questions are in place.  RN Care Coordinators bridge the gap between hospital and home to provide you with a world class care experience.
